The abseil at The Shelter Rock is a fun activity for all. You can learn the basics of abseiling and determine weather you wish to progress to the summit abseil. friends and family can encourage you all the way down.

Why do the Abseil?

You can experience the excitement of abseiling without having to hike all the way to the Magaliesberg cliff face.

  • During the abseil you will improve your eye, hand and body coordination, listening skills and conquer your fear for the unknown.
  • This is an excellent team building, school and youth adventure.

What does it entail?

You arrive at Shelter Rock Base Camp where you register. Your instructor will brief you on what to expect as well as safety issues.

  • Gear is issued before you hike to The Shelter Rock where the adventure begin.
  • You climb to the top of The Shelter Rock and take in the view of the valley while you await your turn for your abseil.
  • When your turn comes your instructor will teach you the finer tricks of abseiling while he guides you down the southern side of the rock.
  • Afterward you hike down the Magaliesberg back to Base Camp.

What is required?

No previous abseil experience required. More than 95% of our guests have never abseiled before.

  • Anyone in good health and fit enough to handle trail hiking, can do the abseil.
  • Wear loose fitting clothing and closed shoes (tennis shoes, light hiking boots etc.; no sandals). Long hair must be secured. Use lots of sunblock.
  • Bear in mind that it becomes exceptionally hot on the Magaliesberg. Bring along your own refreshments and bottled water. (1.5 liters)
  • Instructors will give you ample opportunity to gain enough confidence to enjoy the experience.

All your gear and instructors.

  • Bring your own refreshments.
  • You are welcome to hike our Mountain Trail at no additional cost after completing the experience.

  • Our braai facilities are also available. Just bring your own food, utensils and charcoal.

Terms and conditions

  • Minimum 10 persons. R350pp. Available Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. Subject to availability of an instructor.
  • All spectators that do not abseil pay our day visitors fee of R80 for adults and R40 for children between 6 and 16 years.

  • All abseil experiences must be booked and paid for in advance.(Please note: If you are more than 30 minutes late for your booked time you will be considered a no show and will forfeit the experience with no refund).
  • If, due to unforeseen circumstances, it is not possible for Shelter Rock to offer the experience on the particular day  Shelter Rock will inform the organizer by phone and offer a mutually acceptable date to complete the experience.
