Climb the Via Ferrata to the summit of the Magaliesberg and hike back to Base Camp

A Via Ferrata (Iron Way) is a stairway anchored on the side of a mountain. It was designed to move troops speedily over the Alps during the world wars. There are presently more than 300 Via Ferratas in the world and is the fastest growing outdoor sport in Europe. The Via Ferrata on Shelter Rock is the only one in Africa.

Why climb the Via Ferrata?

If you are looking for a new exciting outdoor experience with an adrenalin rush you will enjoy our Via Ferrata.
This is a hiking and undemanding stairway climbing experience.
  • From our visitors book: "This was great - never done any rock climbing before; the Via Ferrata was a brilliant introduction!" T W from Benoni.
  • You visit with relative safety the sites and experience the thrills previously reserved only for ardent rock climbers.
  • During the climb you will improve your eye, hand and body coordination, listening skills and conquer your fear for the unknown.
  • This is an excellent group, team building, school and youth adventure.
  • Some people climb for the personal challenge. Some climb for the view. Others climb to tick off a challenge on their bucket list. Some hike to remember their place in the world.

What does it entail?

You arrive at Shelter Rock Base Camp where you park your car and the adventure begin.

  • A briefing by the instructor on what to expect and safety issues is conducted. Gear is issued.
  • You then hike to the base of the cliff face from where you climb the Stairway (Via Ferrata or Iron Way) to the summit of the Magaliesberg.
  • At the top of the Magaliesberg you can enjoy the view before exploreing the Boer war forts, balancing rocks and spire garden before hiking back to Shelter Rock Base Camp.
  • A unique feature of our Stairway is that you have a choice to return to Base Camp via a leisurely scenic walk on our Mountain Trail or a Double Pitch Abseil down the Magaliesberg cliff face.
